Can water bring livelihood security?

Yes, says Mrs. Sini Suresh, kaithavalappil house a young home maker. She adds, “Jalanidhi has made lot of difference in my life in the recent past”. I have two primary school going children. My husband is a Rubber Tapper. His income is all that we had to keep our small household going.  Three years ago, my husband and I decided to become members of Jalanidhi water supply scheme (Keyaparamba BG- Ulikkal GP). After several months of technical and meetings, our scheme was commissioned about 10 months back. We got water at our courtyard during the last summer. Living on the top of the hill, I had to carry all our water during summer and monsoon months. I used to take my children when they were young and keep them at the house near the well, and make several rounds up and down to the house with water filled pots. It was very tiring indeed. At the end, I would have to climb down the hill again to bring back the children. When water comes home every morning, I finish all my water related works at home in the morning itself. Then I had very little work for the rest of the day.

Then somebody told me of a part-time work opportunity at the local Maveli store. I applied and got selected. All that I had to do was to pack dry provisions in the store into plastic packets and seal it. Last month I went to work 17 days. I received Rs.500 as remuneration. Amazing! I only have to pay Rs.50/ month for the water. But last month, I got an additional income of Rs.450 on account of water.

"Jalanidhi has done a sort of silent revolution in the lives of rural communities in Ulikkal; this is something much different from what we have experienced over the several decades in the history of our village and Panchayath” says Shri. Joji Varghese, Vice President of Ulikkal GP.
